The monuments of Rolous, which served as the capital for Indravarman I (reigned 877-889), are among the largest temples of the pre-Angkorian period and mark the beginning of traditional Khmer art. Visit Preah Ko, erected by Indravarman I in the late 9th century and dedicated to his ancestors in 880; Bakong, the most significant and interesting temple in the group, with its Buddhist monastery located north of the east entrance; and Lolei, with its four brick towers, a replica of Preah Ko, built on an island now covered by rice fields, by Yasovarman I, founder of the first city of Angkor.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
Continue with visits to some of the most remarkable temples of the Angkor site, such as Ta Prohm and Ta Keo, both engulfed in lush vegetation, as well as Neak Pean, Preah Khan, and Thommanon temples.

Day 3: Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat (breakfast and lunch.)

Lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, visit Angkor Wat, an imposing "mountain-temple" built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II. This sanctuary, representing the peak of the Khmer empire, is known for its concentric enclosure plan, its perfect proportions, and the richness of its carved decorations—a masterpiece of classical Khmer art. If there is only one monument to see in Angkor, this would be it!
Enjoy the sunset from Phnom Bakheng hill.
Dinner at your own expense. Overnight in Siem Reap.
Day 4: Visit to the Sacred Mountain of Kulen (breakfast and lunch.)
Breakfast at the hotel, then head to Kulen Mountain. Located 50 km from Siem Reap, it dominates the plains where the major temples are situated. Rivers flowing into Angkor originate from this mountain. In 802, this site became the birthplace of the Khmer Empire when King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java.
At the mountain summit, a small pagoda houses a reclining Buddha statue, now a pilgrimage site for Cambodians. Ancient Khmer temples from the 9th century can be found near the river source.
The riverbed features carved lingas (symbolic representations of Shiva) and depictions of Vishnu resting on the serpent Ananta. Water flowing over the lingas becomes sacred. This natural site, also a national park, includes waterfalls and leisure areas frequented by Cambodians. Due to its distance from Siem Reap hotels and challenging access, Phnom Kulen is rarely visited by foreign tourists, although it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Lunch at a local restaurant, then enjoy the mountain's great waterfall.
Return to Siem Reap in the late afternoon.
Dinner at your own expense. Overnight in Siem Reap.
Day 5: Discovery of Tonle Sap Lake and Encounters with Local Ethnic Groups (breakfast and lunch.)
Breakfast at the hotel, then transfer to Prei Monti Village, where you will meet Mrs. Ri at the colorful Rolous market. Explore the market to purchase vegetables, freshwater fish, meat, and spices. Mrs. Ri will help you prepare traditional Cambodian dishes.
Continue to Kampong Pluk, a village of fishermen and a flooded forest. This stilted village on Tonle Sap Lake is home to 2,500 Khmer fishermen who maintain a unique water-centered way of life. Depending on the season, the village's appearance changes, with inhabitants adjusting their homes to water levels.
Return to Prei Monti Village, then complete meal preparation with the host family.
Enjoy a traditional Khmer lunch with the family.
In the afternoon, immerse yourself in local life with a bike or walking tour through the Khmer countryside. Discover colorful pagodas, small markets, tropical plantations, and meet the locals with the guidance of your tour leader.
