Phong Nha and Dark caves.

Tour Code: PN04
Duration: 01
Level: Easy

Dark cave is an ideal experience for adventure and action lovers. The visit includes using a zip-line harnessed over a turquoise river; swimming to the mouth of the cave (life jackets included); walking in the dark with only a headlamp on your miner’s helmet to light the way; a mud fight at the bottom of the cave; and swimming in the internal lake. Return by kayak via the suspended obstacle course and open zip-lines.

Dark cave is named because it is one of the few caves without artificial lighting. It is primarily composed of basalt and limestone. Basalt is a black, hard rock that contributes to the cave’s name. You will squeeze through narrow, muddy passages using only your headlamps to light the way.

Phong Nha cave is not only a World Natural Heritage site but also a relic of the historic Ho Chi Minh trail. During the American War, it served as a secret hideout for floating bridges (which were only brought out at night to avoid targeted bombings.) These bridges were key elements in the north-to-south supply chain, allowing supply trucks to cross rivers. It also once served as a hospital, with weapons stationed at the entrance. Once its location was discovered, it was heavily bombed, leaving the external scars you see today. This area has now become the first section of the very popular Ho Chi Minh trail due to its lush mountainous landscape.
