Day 4: Kratie – Mondulkiri (breakfast and lunch)
Breakfast at the hotel. Head to Koh Trong Island, opposite Kratie, to explore the Khmer countryside. You will visit the island by bicycle (by moto-taxi if you prefer not to pedal). The Vietnamese floating village in the north of the island gives the illusion of a world apart. The sun illuminates the rice fields and the farms where horse-drawn carts and ox carts are pulled by farmers. The giant white cows with large ears are a spectacle not to miss. You will taste coconut water and have lunch with the locals.
Transfer to Sen Monorom, the capital of Mondulkiri province. This province, bordering Vietnam, is isolated, sparsely populated, and covered with forests with many waterfalls. It is one of the highest inhabited areas of Cambodia (plateau at about 1,000 m above sea level) and cooler than Phnom Penh in the summer, making it a popular holiday destination for Cambodians during the hot season.
Ethnic groups with distinct customs, such as the Phnongs, live in this region in long thatched-roof houses where several dozen people live. If the weather allows, you can watch the sunset from Mount Dos Kromom and observe the sea of forests.
Dinner not included. Overnight in Mondulkiri.
Day 5: Mondulkiri – Elephant Community (breakfast and lunch)
After breakfast, depart for the village of Phu Tain where the Mnong people still use elephants as working animals. This village will be the starting point of your 2-hour walk to search for elephants in the jungle. After meeting the Mnongs, follow a beautiful small river lined with dense tropical forest. Then, take a ride with the elephants to O Té waterfalls, a true hidden paradise in the jungle. You will have several opportunities to swim with the elephants and will enjoy a picnic lunch.
